👋Hi everyone, it’s Angel again. Welcome to this week's members-only edition of Ban Island’s Collection Guide.
Following our viral Global Hermès Survey Results, many of you have asked that we do the same for Chanel so here you go! Thank you again to everyone who has participated! 🙏
Without further ado, let’s see what Chanel Shopping was like for all of us this year.

Global Chanel Survey Results
1. Is Chanel limiting your purchase?
43.7% of participants said they were only allowed to purchase 1 Chanel bag in April!
In an effort to crack down on resellers, Chanel is placing a limit of 1 bag and 1 SLG a month (per store) on their North American shoppers. In the UK, shoppers are now limited to 1 bag and 1 SLG every 2 months (per store).
This new policy (as of April 2021) is certainly a hot topic that has made waves within the Chanel community.
2. Is Chanel limiting where you ship your purchase?
67.4% of participants were not able to ship to a tax free state.
Alongside their new buying limit, Chanel has recently announced that they will no longer be able to ship your purchases to states including:
- Delaware
- Oregon
- New Hampshire
- Montana
- Alaska
Basically, your billing and shipping addresses MUST match.
3. Where do you buy your Chanel from?

Interesting!! Only 39% of us buy our Chanels fresh from Chanel boutiques (leased stores).
Resellers are second with 26%. With all of these unicorns being sold out before the collection launch date, oftentimes resellers are the only option to get it. 😕 Rumour has it that all the unicorn bags are being bought up by resellers, but i’ll get to that later on.
TIP: If you do choose to resell your Chanel babies online, make sure you do so safely! I have shared a breakdown on all the safe (and not so safe) online payment options including my very own payment reversal horror story.
4. How much is everyone spending on Chanel?
34.8% of Ban Island members spent around $5K to $10K. With the new Chanel price increase, this amount is really just 2 Mini Flap bags or 1 Classic Flap. 🤭
Close seconds are $10-20K and $20-30K. Basically, most of us are buying 1 Chanel SLG or bag every other month? (Yup, I know I am!)
5. How much do you have to spend to become a Chanel VIP?
The sweet spot seems to be about $10-30K USD to become a Chanel VIP. Remember that the amount varies and may be subjective to what you buy (RTW & Jewelry cough cough) and what country you’re in.
TIP: The process of becoming a Chanel VIP doesn’t stop there; establishing a good relationship with a sales associate (SA) also boosts your chances of promotion. I have gotten lots of questions about how to strike and maintain a relationship with SA so I will do a post on that soon, so stay tuned!
6. How does everyone feel about the Chanel 2021 Price increase?
39.1% of us would rather buy an Hermès bag.
With the latest 2021 Chanel price increase, a Classic Chanel Flap is around $6-10K USD, right up there with a retail-priced Hermès Birkin or Kelly!
34.8% of you are still buying Chanel despite their recent price increase.

TIP: Despite the outrageous price increases, the Classic Flap is still one of the best low-risk investments you can make. These babies are still going up in price and value, regardless of the economy. With a consistent demand and an already limited supply, Chanel Flaps still have a great return on investment (ROI).

More about Chanel price increases
This year (2021) Chanel prices have increased by an average of 6%! That number sounds small but that’s a jump from $5800 to $6200 USD in retail price for the timeless Classic Flap. While the frequency depends, Chanel has increased their prices 2 times a year for the past 2 years:
- End of January or the beginning of February
- September (Canada)
- November (US - this was just before Holidays)
As you know, the trickiest part is that in different countries, the price increases on different dates and for different amounts. We all know it may happen soon, but don’t know how much and exactly which date. When I have asked my SAs in the past, they didn't know anything until several days before.
Price increases are disheartening and frustrating, especially for us die-hard lovers that are saving money to hunt down our unicorn bag all whilst keeping up with the rising price.
From my experience, the longer you wait to purchase, the more the bag is going to cost you. There’s nothing like a looming price increase that heightens panic buying amongst us Chanel lovers. 😂
7. What are everyone’s thoughts on the current Chanel quality and craftsmanship?
0% of Ban Island Members said they loved the current Chanel quality and craftsmanship.
Yikes.
39.8% of people said they’ve seen a decline, but are still buying.
34.8% are now passing on poorly made items.
Most notable flaws to look out for are:

- Quality of leather, especially apparent on the Classic Flaps
- Seasonal bags tend to be of a lesser quality than the classics
- The diamond quilts lose their “puffiness” fast.
- “Dots” and “Tiny Holes” on the quilts
- Lopsided bags (one side is flat)
26.1% of you are just over it, and are moving on.
8. What Chanel bags is everyone on the hunt for? 🔍
Surprise, surprise, the most popular bag is none other than the Chanel Classic Flap. You sure can’t go wrong with a classic.
The MOST popular bag right now is Chanel Flap Bag with Top Handle. Modelled after the Classic Flap, and similar to the Coco Handle, I definitely think this new classic will withstand the test of time.
9. Let's put to rest the myth that unicorn bags have all been purchased. How many of you were offered a Chanel unicorn bag?
52.2% of you had to buy your unicorn bag from resellers.
On the flip, this also means that 47.8% were offered a unicorn bag.
With the new policies in place, I won't be surprised to see this number change significantly in the near future.
