Top 10 Chanel Bags with the BEST Collection Value

As requested by our awesome FB Group “Luxury Handbags Resale Insights” members, Top 10 Best Collection Value Chanel Bags was the most popular topic this week.

 

After sifting through over 35,000 resale listings from various platforms, I present to you this year’s top 10. Spoiler alert: they’re not all “Bags.” 👀

Ban Island Members, you know the drill. We excluded the lowest and highest price outliers, and averaged out the price of listings that were in new or excellent condition for each Chanel bag style. From there, we use resale vs retail price and rank them based on the highest percentage increase.

With the new 2021 price increase, the margins of your favorite Chanel bags have definitely shifted. You may even be surprised to see what bags made (or didn’t make) our list. As always, all currencies are in USD. 

Starting off strong with the very popular Chanel Trendy CC bag, this top handle bag has been popular from previous years and has been released again this year. This year it's quilted and comes in Black, Silver, Beige and Lilac.

The Chanel 19 is a modern take with a slouchier design and a thicker chain. It may not have been a hit from release but with its durable goatskin leather and a modern slouchier look, it has gained popularity since! Some of the harder-to-get colors like grays and coco ribbon tweeds are fetching ALOT more than retail while the blacks or beiges are just around retail price.

Bet you didn’t see this size and silhouette coming. The Mini Square Flap has a higher gross profit margin than Small and Medium due to Chanel’s most recent price increase earlier this year. 

So you’ve decided on a classic bag, the next step is choosing a leather. Caviar leather aka grained calfskin has a higher collection value across all sizes of the Chanel Classic Flap. This leather is definitely a Chanel fan favorite because of its durability and its ability to withstand more everyday wear. And yes, gold hardware always fetch more than silver hardware.

Surprise, surprise! It’s interesting to see that WOCs (Wallet on Chains) have made the list as they are not technically bags. (Chanel categorized them as SLGs - Small leather goods) Nonetheless, many people are now using WOCs since they are great small-sized bags that can hold all your essentials!

When considering WOCs, go for special embellishments like pearls or crystals as they do fetch more than retail.

True across all Chanel bag styles, but especially for the Coco Handle, metallic and iridescent calfskin have a much higher collection value than classic leathers such as caviar and lambskin. This extra mini size is oh so cute, but beware that it DOES NOT fit most larger phones. (I literally switched to an Iphone 12 Mini so it would fit) So while the "smallest" size generally fetch the most amount, it's not the case here for that very reason.

WOC for the win again. Most people love the look of the Chanel 19, but find it too large, so it makes sense that the Chanel 19 WOC is climbing up in popularity. This little gem is fetching for over $4K in the preloved market in rare colors.

The "Vanity with Chain" was first released in 2020 as is considered a SLG "Small Leather Good." It sold out everywhere, instantly because of its appealing price point. You can't really get a luxury bag below $2000 these days, so the fact that you can get a crossbody "bag" that fits a phone for that price, made this SLG fly off the shelves. 

From there, the preloved market was selling these for $2500-3000 at some point. Now that Chanel has released "Vanity with Chain" in many shapes and sizes, the collection value have calmed down a bit and it's fetching at just over $2K again. 

The Mini Rectangle is THE ultimate Classic Flap bag. Similar to the mini square shape mentioned above, the rectangle shape is even more popular with a higher collection value. Caviar leather minis have been discontinued since 2017, and they are fetching for over $6K sometimes with the lambskin version at around $5K.

Remember #6 the Coco Handle Extra Mini? This is the slightly larger sister that ACTUALLY fits a larger phone. The Coco Handle is released this year in the hottest Brown/Caramel color, and it's topping the chart with its collection value.

Drum roll please! The number one bag is none other than the...

The bag that is on everyone’s wish-list. This year, Chanel re-introduced its caviar leather on the ever popular mini rectangle size AND added top handles = genius. This Chanel Mini Flap with Top Handle has a profit margin of a whopping 59.8%! Word on the street is this top handle mini flap style is here to stay, but future releases will be in lambskin only.

This style is released in Black caviar, White caviar, Metallic white caviar and Rose lambskin. The combo with the highest collection value is currently Black caviar with brushed gold hardware at almost $7K, with all the other variations at around $6.5K.
